The beauty industry offers an amazing career opportunity for
both women and men and at any age. It is
the industry that can be very rewarding for those that want to work hard, set
and reach goals, express their creativity and make a difference in the lives of
others. It can also gobble up many
hopefuls and send them home packing wondering why it didn’t work for them.
It can seem the path would be simple such as enroll in a beauty school, graduate, get the required state certifications, hang up a shingle and make a living and become a beauty industry legend. It isn’t however simple at all. It takes a wide range of skills, both natural skills that are polished and learned skills that must be sought out, to make it as a beauty freelancer or beauty industry entrepreneur.
The place to start is with you. Your dreams can also take a side road here or there but in the end you should know exactly where you would like to end up. Planning your goals is critical. If you don’t know where you want to go then you can’t exactly start a journey to get there. Don’t just plan in your head but rather put it down onto paper. It is a proven fact that those that plan in detail on paper are more likely to reach their goals. Set yourself up for success and plan your goals out on paper.
Once you know what you want to be, whether it is a developer of beauty products, the designer of a nationally known brand, the owner of a chain of salons, or a reputable stylist or makeup artist, then it is time to discover the very best currently in your industry. Social media makes it possible to connect with leaders in your chosen field and many will be willing to either offer advice or become a mentor. You could be mentored into your career by someone that you never meet face to face and that is an opportunity that should not be missed. Once you too are successful you can pay your own way to take them out to a nice celebratory dinner and finally introduce yourself in person. The important thing is that you think out of the box and find the best people to surround you even if they are not in your immediate area.
Study those skills that will be helpful to your success outside of the beauty career concentration such as accounting, marketing, leadership, management and current news concerning small businesses. Become one of those people that picks up a business magazine as easily as a beauty magazine and you will be ready to lead a business empire once the opportunity is there. It’s important to get ready before your opportunity arrives!
Attend tradeshows, seminars and private training sessions with professionals. Summer starts the beginning of training sessions conducted by our Kobe Ellis (see Classes by Kobe page) and such courses can hone your skills so seek out experts in specific fields where you need to build confidence. Tradeshows such as The Makeup Show are full of top vendors, industry experts and the opportunity to attend numerous seminars. It is well worth the planning and expense to attend a large tradeshow. Go with the intent to learn, network and gain insight into the beauty industry so if you take along someone make sure they are supportive of your goals. Read beauty industry business books such as the “bible of freelancers” written by Crystal Wright titled “Crystal Wright's Hair Makeup & Fashion Styling Career Guide”.
